What is Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy aims to restore movement and the ability to function when the body has been influenced by pain, dysfunction, acute trauma or chronic repetition.  The goal is to reduce the severity of symptoms and reduce the risk of further injury.  A holistic approach is adopted to ensure both short term and long-term benefits are felt by the patient, leading to self-management of their own body.  As a musculoskeletal specialism the joints, nerves and muscles of the neck, back, pelvis or limbs are examined and treated.  The physiotherapist’s role is to establish which structure has been damaged and establish a programme towards recovery.

Treatment Expectations

The basis for any treatment is a thorough initial assessment and examination.  A diagnosis will be discussed, together with an explanation as to the reasoning used to come to this conclusion. The tailored treatment plan often uses some of the following techniques: soft tissue release, massage, joint mobilisation, movement pattern analysis and re-education together with muscle strength training.  An individualised home exercise programme will be issued if appropriate.
