Karen Hurley: Counselling

Mondays 16:00-20:00 and Tuesdays 17:00-20:00

About Me

Hello, I am Karen, an integrative counsellor, working from a person centred perspective.  This means I use different types of counselling theories in my work, depending on the issue(s) you wish to bring to counselling and most importantly what feels right for you.  I am a warm and empathic person and will offer you a space to be heard and respected.  You can talk about whatever you want to in confidence and will not be judged.

Is something causing you to feel worried, anxious or upset; or maybe you are feeling stuck or uncertain about the future?  Sometimes it can feel difficult to talk to those closest to us and some people choose to speak to a counsellor instead.  If you are considering whether you would like to try counselling and/or choosing a counsellor, I realise this can sometimes feel difficult. I hope the information in my profile will be helpful with those choices.  However, please do contact me if you would like to talk to me about this in more detail, or would like some further information to help you make a decision.

Professional Registration
I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and work in accordance with their Ethical Framework for Good Practice.  I have regular supervision in accordance with the requirements of BACP and undertake ongoing Continuing Professional Development.  I am insured with Towergate Insurance.

My Experience

I offer short and long term counselling to anyone aged 18 or over and have experience of providing counselling in the voluntary sector and in primary care.

I have specific training, experience and an interest in providing counselling to unpaid family carers, whether you are new to caring, have been caring for a long time, or if your caring role is coming to an end.  For many carers this can be helpful to address feelings of loneliness and isolation and to look at strategies for looking after your own health and wellbeing.

Prior to training as a counsellor I worked in the NHS for 10 years as a Complaints and PALS Manager.  I provided support to patients, their families and carers on a daily basis and have extensive experience of supporting people in distress as a result of illness, disability or as a result of bereavement.

I also have experience of working with:

  • depression
  • loss
  • bereavement
  • anger
  • guilt
  • life changes
  • illness - impact on self and others
  • anxiety
  • low self esteem
  • relationship problems
  • work issues

  • Fees are payable in cash at the end of each session.
  • I offer an initial 50 minute session at a reduced rate of £25.
  • Subsequent sessions are £40 for 50 minutes.
  • If you are unable to attend a session please provide at least 24 hours notice, otherwise the full fee is still payable.
  • I have a small number of appointments available at a reduced rate.  Please ask me for further details.
