Going to see a therapist often feels a big step ...  We may be reluctant to admit, even to ourselves, that we need help and talking to a stranger about personal issues can initially seem exposing.  You may worry that a therapist will be silent or unable to grasp your unique difficulties - but these days therapy is usually a relaxed, interactive and supportive process where two people try to understand and then change whatever is causing unease.

 

Feeling distressed, overwhelmed or continually anxious can make it difficult to cope with the pressures of everyday life.  Problems relating to others can undermine confidence and our sense of who we are, leaving us hurt and confused.  We may feel unable to live up to our own expectations, or what we imagine others want from us.  Major life changes such as divorce, bereavement, career transitions, moving - even seemingly happy events like having a baby or being successful - can sometimes leave us feeling oddly dislocated and on edge.

 

Although I have worked with an extensive variety of problems and clients (see below) I mainly specialise in helping with:

 

  • Depression, low confidence, difficulty asserting yourself and having a voice.
  • Stress, feeling overwhelmed and as though things are falling apart for you.
  • Problems within relationships, and difficulty starting relationships.
  • 'Women's issues' related to infertility, birth, miscarriage, termination, motherhood and menopause.
  • Confusion about identity and life direction - who are you really, as opposed to being the person you think other people want?  How to balance your needs and others' and fulfil your potential?

I use a flexible, interactive approach, adapted to your needs and preferences, but also drawing on models of what is effective.  Starting from an interpersonal perspective, we try to make sense of what you are feeling by looking at how you react to people and experiences in your life and in therapy itself.

 

Therapy is about:

  • easing the distress and symptoms that made you seek help
  • exploring how patterns in the way you relate to others and the way you think may affect your emotions and health
  • constructing a story of your life that draws together and explains past and present, allowing you to make changes and see different options in the future
  • helping you to feel stronger, more resilient, more in control and also more relaxed.

Frances Arden is a UKCP Registered Psychotherapist who began her career in psychotherapy and counselling in 1988.  For ten years Frances worked in mental health and social services, running groups and providing counselling services for depression, severe anxiety, eating disorders, relationship difficulties and personality disorders.  She has been a counsellor in GP surgeries, drama school and for university students and staff in the UK and USA.  For the last ten years she has run a successful private practice in London and Bristol.
